Psychosomatic Disorders

Psychosomatic means mind (psyche) and body (soma). A psychosomatic disorder is a disease which involves both mind and body. Some physical diseases are thought to be particularly prone to be made worse by mental factors such as stress and anxiety. Your current mental state can affect how bad a physical disease is at any given time.

Psychosomatic Disorders

Conversion Disorder

Conversion Disorder is most simply described as someone who experiences a physical ailment with no neurological or other apparent cause. While the symptoms cannot be explained by any physical medical condition, they are indeed very real and require treatment. These individuals may experience blindness, paralysis, or other neurological symptoms that typically come on suddenly and often after one has experienced a period of emotional or physical distress.

Factitious Disorder

Factitious Disorder or know as Munchhausen is when a person without motive acts as if they have an illness in order to assume the role of a patient. Sufferers will intentionally fabricate their symptoms, which can range from mild to severe. Unlike Conversion Disorder, those with Factitious Disorder are consciously aware that they are inventing their symptoms, although they may not understand why.

Non-Epileptic Seizures

These are seizure events that take place but are not related in any way to epilepsy. While episodes include symptoms similar to epileptic seizures, such as stiffening or jerking, what the individual is experiencing is not the result of abnormal electrical discharges from the brain. Instead, they are thought to be the result of trauma, unresolved emotional distress, or other psychological factors.
